Slovenia’s most Authentic Alpine Journey through Majestic Glacial Valleys
VELIKA PLANINA · LOGAR VALLEY · SOLČAVA PANORAMIC ROAD · JEZERSKO
Experience the raw, high-mountain heart of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps. This trek balances the rugged drama of limestone peaks with the serene charm of traditional highland life. Journey from the rolling pastures of Velika Planina, Europe’s oldest active herdsmen settlement, to the emerald-green sanctuaries of the Logar Valley and Jezersko.
Between challenging ridgeline treks, you’ll e-bike along the Solčava Panoramic Road, taste fresh local dairy at remote farmstays, and find peace by the turquoise waters of Planšarsko Jezero. Designed for hikers seeking both physical challenge and cultural depth, this tour reveals Slovenia’s most picturesque “hidden” Alps. From cosy mountain huts to boutique valley hotels, discover an alpine fairy tale far from the crowds.
Day 1: Alpine Pastures of Velika Planina
After a transfer from Ljubljana, your trek begins at the foot of Velika Planina. The shaded forest trail offers a steady climb, perfect for finding your rhythm as the trees eventually open up to rolling alpine pastures. This is Europe’s oldest active herdsmen settlement, where traditional wooden huts dot the landscape and cows graze freely. Take a moment to sample some fresh local dairy directly from the farms.
If you’d prefer to save your legs for the days ahead, you can take the cable car and glide up to the plateau instead. In the afternoon, a short drive brings you to Luče, a quiet, authentic village tucked away by the emerald Savinja River.
Hiking: 13 km / elevation +1100 m, -550 m / approx. 6 hours
Cable car & Hike: 9 km / elevation +250 m, -650 m / approx. 4 hours
Overnight: charming farmstay in Luče
Day 2: In the heart of Kamnik-Savinja Alps
After a hearty breakfast, a short transfer brings you to the start of today’s alpine adventure. The trail leads you through breathtaking high-mountain terrain, winding over rocky ridges and lush pastures as the classic alpine scenery unfolds with sweeping views of peaks, valleys, and distant ridgelines.
For those craving an extra challenge, there’s an opportunity for some light scrambling to climb one of the highest peaks of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps, rewarding your efforts with spectacular panoramic views. After summiting, or enjoying the lower trail at your own pace, you’ll begin a steeper descent to your mountain hut for the night, perfectly set between the highest peaks and the stunning Logar Valley.
Hiking: 10 km / elevation +700 m, -1050 m / approx. 6 hours
Hiking with extensions: 12 km / elevation +850 m, -1200 m / approx. 7 hours
Overnight: mountain hut (private rooms if available!) with shared bathrooms
Day 3: Descend into the Beauty of Logar Valley
Today’s objective is to conquer an additional alpine peak right after breakfast at the hut, rewarding you with spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding massifs. After soaking in the high-altitude vistas, you’ll begin your descent toward the magnificent Logar Valley, one of Slovenia’s most picturesque glacial landscapes. The trail winds down through shaded forests and opens up to views of lush meadows and crystal-clear streams framed by dramatic rock walls.
For those looking to take it easy and unwind, you can opt for a direct descent from the hut. This shorter route allows more time to enjoy the peaceful alpine atmosphere and settle into your boutique hotel—the perfect place to relax and rest your legs in the heart of the valley.
Hiking: 9 km / elevation +550 m, -1000 / approx. 6 hours
Hiking straight to hotel: 3 km / elevation +0 m , -450 m / approx. 1.5 hours
Overnight: 4* hotel in Logar Valley
Day 4: Biking the Solčava Panoramic Road
Switch your hiking boots for an e-bike and discover the Solčava Panoramic Road. Ride on a hilly road through rolling alpine meadows, past lonely farms, small churches, and open pastures, all framed by the stunning peaks surrounding the valley. Expect breathtaking views at every turn and plenty of photo opportunities along the way – Slovenia’s countryside at its most serene and beautiful!
If you prefer to stay on foot, take an out-and-back hike to Slap Rinka. Follow the path that winds through peaceful forests and meadows to a spectacular waterfall tucked at the far end of the valley.
Biking: 35 km / elevation +1000 m, -1000 m / approx. 5 hours
Hiking option: 10 km / elevation +300 m, -300 m / approx. 4 hours
Overnight: 4* hotel in Logar Valley
Day 5: The High Crossing to Jezersko
Today brings the most demanding hike of the trip, taking you through the dramatic landscapes of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps to Jezersko. The trail starts at the end of Logar Valley and climbs steadily into rocky terrain above the tree line, offering increasingly breathtaking mountain views. You’ll reach the saddle at the Austrian border before descending toward Jezersko, with magnificent panoramas of the northern walls of the towering alpine peaks.
Just before reaching your accommodation, pause at a tranquil mountain lake, perfect for soaking in the alpine scenery. After a full day in the high mountains, this gentle finish feels especially rewarding. Well done, enjoy the alpine fairy tale.
Hiking: 12 km / elevation gain +1000 m, -1150 m / approx. 8 hours
Overnight: A charming family-run alpine farmstead
Day 6: Farewell to the Alpine Valleys
Enjoy a relaxed morning and take a moment to reflect on the journey you’ve just completed. Days of challenging hikes, big views, and unforgettable alpine memories.
In the early afternoon, your driver will pick you up for the return transfer to Ljubljana, the airport or your next destination.
We highly recommend adding an extra day in Jezersko. This peaceful alpine valley is perfect for recovery, with its gentle walks, quiet corners by the lake, and scenic viewpoints.

DIFFICULT hiking
Expect to walk 6-8 hours per day, with 10-15 km (6-10 miles) in distance and up to 1100 m (3600 ft) of elevation gain on the hardest day. It might not sound much, but so far, no one has ever said that it was too easy. Therefore, you must be in reasonable shape and have some hiking experience to fully enjoy this tour.
What are the trails like?
Expect steep uphill and downhill sections, uneven terrain, and sometimes narrow trails with loose gravel. Stamina and prior hiking experience are essential, but no technical climbing knowledge is necessary. On some days, you will hike partly in the shade of a forest, on others above the treeline, but mostly without any shelter along the way.
The biking trails are mainly nice gravel roads, but you’ll also ride asphalt backroads. The inclines are gently distributed on longer stretches of the trail, but expect some shorter and steeper sections with softer gravel, too.
Kamnik-Savnija Alps Traverse self-guided hiking trip can be done anytime between June and September. The mountain hut usually opens early in June and closes in beginning of October. June and September generally see fewer fellow hikers. The temperatures in September start decreasing, especially when the sun sets.
What is the weather usually like?
The weather in the mountains can change a lot. On a sunny summer day, it can be very hot, even above 30 °C (90 °F), which is a must for sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat (for shade)! If the weather is bad and windy, you will need really warm clothes. Be prepared for temperatures as low as 5 °C. This does not mean you have to bring a thick down jacket and thermal pants, but just keep in mind that it can get cold and unpleasant.
We also recommend having a thin (lightweight) layer to cover your arms, legs, and the back of your neck to prevent sunburns.

You’ll stay in hand-picked nice and clean 3* and 4* accommodation, in double or single rooms (surcharge) with en-suite bathroom. In the mountain hut, you’ll stay in a room with up to 6 beds, and you will share the washroom with other hikers.
What are the mountain huts like?
Huts in the Slovenian Alps are quite basic, but they offer everything a hiker needs: food, drinks, and accommodation. Food supply is limited, therefore expect simple menus of mountain food like different stews (vegetable or meat), pasta, and sausages. They also sell chocolate, soft drinks, water, beer etc. The usual breakfast would be eggs, ham, cheese, butter and jam.

Trip designer & guide

As a kid, I spent countless weekends hiking across Slovenia with my family, cousins, and friends as part of a school alpine club. Like many teenagers, I briefly rebelled and decided hiking was boring, but that didn’t last long. The moment I got my driving license, I found my way back to the mountains. Just a girl, a trail, and endless freedom. In winter, you’ll most likely find me carving turns on ski slopes, while summers are all about discovering Slovenia on foot or on two wheels. I’m also a cold-water enthusiast and love swimming throughout the entire year. Icy mountain springs are my favorite. I’m very excited to share my love for Slovenia and the outdoors with you.

With the implementation of modern technology and our extensive local knowledge, we believe we are on the right way of delivering exceptional hiking & biking experiences that you are able to enjoy at your own pace.
Read more about our “self-guided added value”.
Can the stages be shortened or extended?
Yes, on most days it’s possible to shorten or extend the hikes to suit your pace. On a few days, shortening the stage may require an extra transfer, but we’ll be happy to help arrange this for you.
Do I need a sleeping bag?
Not necessarily. The huts provide blankets and one-time-use paper sheets. However, we highly recommend bringing a lightweight cotton sleeping liner (travel sheet), because you’ll sleep better on it and avoid making unnecessary waste and help preserve some trees.
Is luggage transfer to the mountain hut possible?
No. You will need to carry everything you need for the night when you stay in a mountain hut. Your main luggage will wait for you at the hotel in Logar Valley.
What are lunch options along the way?
Each day, there’s a place where you can get a warm meal. If you prefer a packed lunch, ask at your accommodation to prepare one for you or visit a local store. We also recommend bringing enough snacks to keep your energy up during the long hikes.
Do the mountain hut provide vegetarian/vegan meals?
Food in mountain huts is quite basic. There are options for vegans and vegetarians, but the selection is very limited. If you have any special dietary restrictions or needs, we recommend bringing your own snacks and treats.
