Overview

This Alpe Adria Trail adventure is a 3-day hiking, biking and swimming trip along the two most beautiful stages of the Alpe Adria Trail; ideal for anyone who likes to explore nature through a variety of fun outdoor activities.

We will start the tour in Slovenia’s far northwestern corner, hike up the stunning Vrsic Pass and enjoy fascinating views of the highest peaks in the centre of the Julian Alps before descending to the beautiful waterfalls and ponds of the Soca river valley. 

Together with your guide, you’ll get to know Slovenians and parts of our rich history, way of life and enjoy the food we all love so much.

Good news! You are walking and biking on beautiful trails, but never too far away from the road. If you get tired, you can cut it short with a transfer.

Itinerary

In the morning the guide will pick you up at your accommodation in Ljubljana or Bled and head northwest to the town of Kranjska Gora, where our hike begins. The starting point is located super close to the three-country border of Slovenia, Austria, and Italy. It boasts spectacular mountain backdrops wherever you look, but it’ll leave you breathless at the tiny green Jasna Lake. 

From the beginning, the trail is fairly flat and wide as you approach the Krnica valley and are surrounded by white limestone walls on some of the highest Slovenian peaks. As the trail becomes a bit steeper, we will reach the Russian chapel. It was built in remembrance of the Russian prisoners who built the road over Vrsic mountain pass during World War One. As we walk the Russian road we’ll make a side trip to a jaw-dropping viewpoint to feel the dramatic yet warm embrace of the mountains.

In the afternoon we reach our cosy mountain hut, where we’ll leave the Alpe Adria Trail stage and overnight.

Starting on a fresh morning, we will offer an extra hike: early risers can add a climb to a stunning peak above Vrsic Pass to enjoy the solitude and morning light over the Julian Alps.

We will rejoin the rest of the group on Vrsic Pass and head down to nature’s paradise, Trenta Valley. This horseshoe-shaped valley used to be mined for iron ore. Yet today it is still a fine example of the most unspoiled countryside in Slovenia, where time stands still. The trails take us from the highest mountain pass in the eastern Julian Alps through the foothills of Mt. Jalovec to Trenta Valley. After a long descent, you’ll reach your hut for the night. Just a few minutes walk away is the Soca Spring, the headwaters of the emerald Soca River.

If you still have a high spirit and some strength in your legs, you can discover some hidden waterfalls and have a beer in one of the cutest alpine hotels in Slovenia. Actually, you can also stay there if you don’t mind spending 200 € per room and skipping the shared rooms of the mountain hut. Either way, you’ll love how the mountains change colour as the stars come out at the end of the day.

Today you’ll hike & bike the Soca Trail, taking in the most beautiful section along the 138km-long Soca River. You’ll absolutely love its verdant green landscape.

All around you, water will sparkle in the sunshine and you’ll have lots of chances to swim in turquoise ponds along the way. The lionhearted can jump into the Great Soca Gorge, the biggest canyon on the emerald river. The 750m-long canyon is also home to the marble trout fish, which is endemic to Slovenia. You’ll find the fish mysterious, chilling in the freezing cold water. Yet they swim really well, as should you because, on the first jump in, you’ll want to rush out as never before. Stay in a little longer to become cold-blooded too.

You’ll walk mostly downhill along the Soca Valley until lunchtime. Later, we’ll hop on mountain bikes and ride a mix of gravel roads, forest paths, and asphalt backroads all the way to Bovec, the adventure capital of Slovenia. After reaching the town late afternoon, you can return to Bled or Ljubljana with your guide or spend a few extra days in Bovec for world-class outdoor adventures, such as rafting on the Soca, canyoning, kayaking, zip-lining and more.

FAQ

Expect to walk about 5-6 hours per day within a distance of 13-15 km (8-9 miles). On the most challenging day, you’ll gain 900 m (2900 ft) of elevation. Most of the time the trails are easy and well crafted, however there are also some narrow and steep downhill sections. Sometimes they are rocky and on a rainy day can be slippery. Hiking experience and a reasonable fitness level are necessary to fully enjoy this trip. If the hike turns out to be more difficult than you expected, you always have an escape option and can get a transfer to the next accommodation. 

The hiking trails are mostly well crafted and fairly easy to walk on, yet you can expect to walk along some steep sections with occasional slippery roots and rocks. The terrain is uneven, sometimes rocky and narrow, covered with gravel, grass and forest soil. Mostly the trails are in the shade of the forest, but be prepared for sun exposure too.

The biking trails are mainly nice gravel and dirt roads, but you’ll also ride asphalt backroads. The inclines are gently distributed on longer stretches of the trail, but expect some shorter and steeper sections with softer gravel too.  

In summer (from June to early September) the weather is usually hot, with temperatures around 25-30 deg C (75-90 deg F). In peak season (August) you can expect a heatwave with temperatures likely exceeding 35 deg C (95 deg F) as well as a significant temperature drop in the mountains on a cloudy, windy or rainy day.

Expect to bike about 2 hours within a distance of 16 km (10 miles) and 250 m (820 ft) elevation gain.

The biking is easy but still exciting for all who have never biked off asphalt roads. Thus it’s good to feel confident about riding a bike on gravel roads. This means that you’re in control when pedaling in a sitting and standing position, as well as changing gears, safely using the brakes while keeping control and maneuvering the bike while other people are around too. There is a section on a regional asphalt road as well.

You can expect sometimes to encounter a thicker layer of gravel, pothole, as well as rocks and roots, which can affect your steering and balance. In case you feel uneasy on some sections, you can always get off the bike and push for a few metres.

If you’re quickly short of breath, upgrade to an e-bike. 

Huts in the Slovenian Alps are quite basic, but they offer everything a hiker needs: food, drinks and accommodation. Food supply is limited, therefore expect simple menus of mountain food like different stews (vegetable or meat), pasta and sausages. They also sell chocolate, soft drinks, water, beer etc. The usual breakfast would be eggs, ham, cheese, butter, jam… 

Expect to share a room, toilets, bathrooms or washrooms. Rooms are from 4 to 12 beds. 

If you’d like a little luxury, you can opt to stay at a lovely mountain hotel the second night. It costs approx. 200 € per room. Let us know if you are interested and we will try to book it for you. 

Apart from your main travel luggage, follow the packing checklist below, which we recommend for this trip:

  • Comfortable and sturdy hiking shoes (preferably high-cut)
  • Long hiking pants/trousers (preferably zip off and fast dry fabric)
  • Short pants/trousers
  • T-shirts and tank tops
  • Long sleeve shirts
  • Warm jacket (fleece)
  • Rain & wind protection jacket (lightweight rain & windproof jacket)
  • Comfortable hiking socks
  • Thin gloves
  • Sun protection (sunscreen with 30+ factor, hat with visor, sunglasses)
  • Personal items (personal hygiene, medicine etc.)
  • Hiking poles (if you regularly use them for hiking)
  • A water bottle or hydration bladder (2l volume is recommended, tap water in Slovenia is potable)
  • A small backpack to carry your things while walking (15l is recommended)
  • Swimsuit and a small towel
  • Travel insurance

We require a 20% deposit to confirm your booking. The balance is to be paid 14 days before the trip. Both payments are non-refundable. 

Purchasing travel insurance is recommended, as anyone can encounter unforeseen circumstances while travelling. So you don’t lose your money, we suggest including trip cancellation, medical coverage, baggage loss, loss of passport or wallet, etc. in your insurance policy.

An electric bike or E-bike is a regular pushbike with an electric motor to assist your pedaling, yet is only activated when the pedals are already in motion.
