Activity Level & Trail Info

Difficulty level: Moderate

Daily activities: 4–7 hours
Hiking:  10–14 km (6–9 miles) / 200-900 m (600-3000 ft).
Biking: 16-40 km (10-25 mi) / 250-700 m (800 – 2300 ft).

Hiking terrain: Your journey spans northwestern to southwestern Slovenia, offering a diverse mix of landscapes, climates, and mostly well-marked trails. It is ideal for hikers with basic fitness, this route offers a rewarding mix of alpine, karst, and coastal scenery.

  • Alpine Region: Expect forest trails, rolling hills, and moderate alpine paths with occasional narrow, uneven, or rocky sections. Some ascents and descents may require caution, but no technical skills are needed. The trails often lead to stunning valley viewpoints.
  • Karst Region (Škocjan Caves): A mix of forested paths, rocky trails, and constructed walkways. The cave system features bridges, staircases, and deep underground canyons, adding a unique element to the hike.
  • Coastal Walk: A scenic route along clifftop paths, forest trails, and seaside promenades, with gentle elevation changes, especially near Strunjan Cliffs.

Biking terrain: The biking trails along Soča River feature a mix of gravel, dirt, and asphalt roads with gentle inclines and occasional steep sections. While generally easy, riders should be comfortable on gravel surfaces and prepared for minor obstacles. In the wine hills, where hilly terrain is common, the ride primarily follows scenic and low-traffic asphalt. E-bikes make the ride more enjoyable, offering a relaxed way to explore stunning landscapes.

Weather

Varied weather conditions depend on altitude and season. In the Alpine Region expect from June to September pleasant temperatures between 20–30°C in valleys, while higher elevations remain cooler, around 10–20°C. In early May and from late September onwards expect milder temperatures. In May, there can still be some snow around Vrsic Pass (the highest point of the trip). Late September can also surprise with early snowfall above 1,500m.

Wine Region and Slovenian Coast enjoy a mild Mediterranean climate with warm, sunny summers and mild winters. Summers can be hot. Spring and autumn are pleasantly warm. Summer temperatures often reach 30°C +. The region enjoys plenty of sunshine year-round, with occasional strong bora winds bringing cooler air in winter.

Afternoon thunderstorms are common in July and August, so carrying rain gear is essential.

Always check the latest weather forecast before setting out, as the weather can change rapidly. Below is the weather forecast for Vrsic Pass Highest point of your trip at 1,600 meters above sea level.

Good To Know

Breakfast: Is included in all accommodations.

Lunch and Dinner: Each day, you’ll have different options for lunch and dinner, which will be detailed in your trip plan.

Snacks: Pack some trail snacks for emergencies. There are grocery stores in the bigger towns.

Accommodations: One night will be spent in a traditional Slovenian mountain hut. Room sizes vary, and while we always book the smallest available room, we cannot guarantee the exact room size. There’s no need to bring a sleeping bag, as sleeping sheets and pillows are provided. Towels are available for rent, and bathrooms are shared.

Mountain hut cuisine is simple, typically featuring stews, pasta, sausages, and bread. Vegetarian options are available, and hutkeepers will do their best to accommodate your preferences. However, if you have specific dietary needs, bringing some suitable food is recommended.

Payment: Most places accept credit card payments. However, we recommend having some cash on you. There are ATMs in Bled, Kranjska Gora, Bovec and Piran.

Water: Water in Slovenia is abundant and of excellent quality. You can refill your water bottles at your accommodations or any place with a reliable water source. However, we do not recommend refilling bottles from open streams.

Charging: We use 220V electrical sockets like this.

Cell Reception & Wi-Fi: Limited in the mountains and remote valleys. But overall reliable.

Public transfer:  If you need to shorten a certain stage for any reason, you can take a public bus. Keep in mind that service is limited during the shoulder season, and delays are possible in the high season (July/August).
