Activity Level & Trail Info
Difficulty level: Moderate
Daily hikes: 5–7 hours / 9–20 km (5.5–12.5 mi) / 400-900 m (1300-3000 ft).
Hiking terrain: Expect occasional narrow and uneven trails through mountain foothills, forested slopes, along the river and moderate alpine paths. These trails feature varied terrain with ascents and descents that may require caution due to rocky or slippery surfaces. In Slovenia, they often lead to stunning viewpoints overlooking scenic valleys.
No technical mountaineering skills are required. Paths guide hikers through diverse landscapes, including lush forests, rolling hills, serene lakeshores, riversides and charming rural areas. If the hike becomes more challenging than expected, there are often escape options. This route is perfect for hikers with basic fitness who want to explore a variety of landscapes.
Biking terrain: You will primarily bike on gravel and dirt roads, with some asphalt sections along the way. The inclines are mostly gradual over longer stretches of the trail, but you should expect occasional shorter, steeper sections with softer gravel as well.
Weather
Varied weather conditions depend on altitude and season. From June to September we usually expect pleasant temperatures between 20–30°C in valleys, while higher elevations remain cooler, around 10–20°C. In early May and from late September onwards expect milder temperatures. In May, there can still be some snow around Vrsic Pass (the highest point of the trip). Late September can also surprise with early snowfall above 1,500m. The trip will be adjusted accordingly if snow is the case.
Afternoon thunderstorms are common in July and August, so carrying rain gear is essential.
Always check the latest weather forecast before setting out, as the weather can change rapidly. Below is the weather forecast for Vrsic Pass (at 1,600 meters above sea level).
Good To Know
Breakfast: Is included in all accommodations.
Lunch and Dinner: Each day, you’ll have different options for lunch and dinner, which will be detailed in your trip plan.
Snacks: Pack some trail snacks for emergencies. There are grocery stores in the towns.
Accommodations: One night will be spent in a traditional Slovenian mountain hut. Room sizes vary, and while we always book the smallest available room, we cannot guarantee the exact room size. There’s no need to bring a sleeping bag, as sleeping sheets and pillows are provided. Towels are available for rent, and bathrooms are shared.
Mountain hut cuisine is simple, typically featuring stews, pasta, sausages, and bread. Vegetarian options are available, and hutkeepers will do their best to accommodate your preferences. However, if you have specific dietary needs, bringing some suitable food is recommended.
Payment: Most places accept credit card payments. However, we recommend having some cash on you. Budgeting 50€ per person per day is more than enough. You can find ATMs in Kranjska Gora, Bovec, and Bohinj and Bled.
Water: Water in Slovenia is abundant and of excellent quality. You can refill your water bottles at your accommodations or any place with a reliable water source. However, we do not recommend refilling bottles from open streams.
Charging: We use 220V electrical sockets like this.
Cell Reception & Wi-Fi: Limited in the mountains and remote valleys.
Public transfer: If you need to shorten a certain stage for any reason, you can take a public bus. Keep in mind that service is limited during the shoulder season, and delays are possible in the high season (July/August).
